Scientists from the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science and the University of Tokyo have invented a new type of plastic that can dissolve in seawater within just a few hours. It is non-toxic and leaves no harmful microplastics, making it safe for marine life.
In a demonstration in Wako City, researchers showed how the plastic gradually disappeared after being submerged in saltwater. On land, it dissolves in about 200 hours and breaks down into environmentally friendly components. It is also non-flammable and does not emit carbon dioxide.
While there are no confirmed plans for mass production yet, several companies in the packaging industry have already expressed interest. As plastic pollution continues to worsen globally, this invention offers a promising solution for a cleaner and safer future. | via Dann Miranda | Photo via PNA
