President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has confirmed that Malacañang is reviewing a white paper accusing Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado of engaging in corrupt practices, including mishandling deportations and facilitating irregularities related to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). The anonymous letter, submitted to the Office of the President on June 2, raises several concerns: possible bribery, visa “auctions,” and undue intervention in the deportation of foreign nationals associated with offshore gaming operators.
Marcos stated the White Paper is under investigation but cautioned that unsigned, vague complaints make scrutiny difficult: “We’re looking at it… it’s hard to study … if it’s unsigned and lacks specifics”. Viado has vehemently denied all allegations, calling them part of a “well‑funded smear campaign,” and defended his actions, saying his reforms are being targeted by vested interests who are threatened by his crackdown on corruption.
Malacañang is urging whistleblowers to come forward with concrete evidence as the Department of Justice, which is spearheading the probe, has stated it will not pursue cases based solely on anonymous, unverified claims. The investigation continues, with both the Palace and DOJ emphasizing the need for transparency and proof before any formal charges are considered. | via Dann Miranda | Photo via PNA
