House OKs 6-year term for barangay and SK officials

The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading a bill extending the term of office for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from three to six years.

House Bill 11287 was passed with 153 votes in favor, four against, and one abstention. The proposed measure aims to give local leaders more time to implement development programs and reduce the frequency of costly and disruptive elections. Under the bill, barangay officials may serve up to two consecutive six-year terms, while SK officials will be limited to one term. The current set of officials, elected on October 30, 2023, will continue serving until May 2029, unless removed for cause.

Despite the bill’s passage, the next barangay and SK elections remain scheduled for December 1, 2025, pending any changes in legislation. The proposal now moves to the Senate for deliberation. | via Dann Miranda | Photo via PNA
