DENR to LGUs: Create a science-based countermeasure against flooding

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) calls for a science-based action to the worsening floods in Metro Manila.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 17, the agency has cited the effects brought by climate change, which exacerbate the problems encountered in urban areas where drainage systems may not be able to properly handle heavy rainfalls.

“The DENR is urging local government units (LGUs) to take proactive measures in addressing flood risks. It is crucial that LGUs integrate comprehensive flood risk reduction programs into their design and solid waste management plans,” said in the statement.

Moreover, DENR also proposed other solutions such as improved drainage designs, a better waste management program, involvement from the locals, and the restoration of the ecosystem.

“As we confront the challenges posed by climate change, it is essential to adapt our urban planning strategies to safeguard our communities,” the agency stated.

“The DENR remains committed to working hand-in-hand with local government units and the public to create a future that mitigates flooding risks and enhances overall community resilience,” DENR ended. Ι via Florence Alfonso
