Kinasuhan ng kasong graft at falsification ng Office of the Ombudsman si dating Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones at dating mga opisyal ng DepEd at Procurement Service-Department of Budget and Management (PS-DBM) dahil sa umano’y pagwaldas sa overpriced at outdated laptops na nagkakahalaga ng PHP2.4 bilyon noong pandemic.
Ang naturang laptops ay inalaan para sa mga public school teachers upang maisagawa ang online class noong pandemic.
Ito ay ayon sa inilabas na 106-page resolution ng Ombudsman noong July 4, mayroong probable cause laban kina Briones at iba pang opisyales ng DepEd at PS-DBM sa paglabag sa Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act at falsification of public documents.
“Not only did the government suffer injury by paying more on the procured laptops, the laptops delivered to the recipient teachers were found to be unsatisfactory, inferior, and could not be used for the intended purpose, i.e. to aid teachers in delivering online classes during the pandemic,” batay sa resolusyon.
Ayon pa sa 2021 Annual Audit Report ng Commission on Audit (COA), ang nasabing laptops ay “pricey for an entry-level type laptop.” Nabawasan din umano ang mga benepisyaryo ng naturang laptops mula 68,500 hanggang 39,583 public school teachers na lamang.
