The Department of Health (DOH) recorded 400 deaths last year due to rabies, 54% of rabies cases were caused by pet owners not being able to get their pets vaccinated.
In a Press Briefing, DOH Secretary Teodoro Herbosa stressed that some of the cases might have been prevented if pets were vaccinated. Whilst not all cases of rabies death were due to pet owners’ neglect, Teodoro added that 40 % of the cases were also caused by people getting up close to stray animals.
Teodoro cries for pet owners to get their pets vaccinated in order to alleviate rabies cases in our country.
If bitten by any animal that is suspected to have rabies, a post-exposure prophylaxis will be administered, but DOH is now concerned about private vaccine clinics such as ABCs that are selling these vaccines at a very low price. Teodoro said that these possibly be unregistered by the FDA. If administered, it can worsen the situation, but DOH reminded the public that prevention is better than a cure, and get their pets vaccinated, and if bitten, go to accredited bite centers and don’t wait for symptoms to worsen. | via Dann Miranda | Photo via PNA
