Electric buses designed specifically for persons with disabilities (PWDs) will soon be launched as a mode of public transport in Metro Manila, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) announced.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian led a demonstration ride with PWDs at the agency’s central office in Batasan Hills, Quezon City, on Monday. The initial fleet of 20 e-buses features a low-floor design, wheelchair ramps, and CCTV cameras to ensure passenger safety. “President Marcos has made it clear—no PWD should face discrimination or abuse in public transport,” Gatchalian said, following a viral video showing a PWD being assaulted by a bus conductor and passengers.
Currently, the e-buses serve as a shuttle transport for people with disabilities (PWDs) working in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. The DSWD is coordinating with the transport department to launch the first public routes in Quezon City.
