As more provinces roll out the BBM rice program, the National Food Authority (NFA) emphasized its renewed role in stabilizing rice supply and backing local farmers under Republic Act 12708.
In Central Visayas, NFA-7 has procured over 16,000 bags of palay—exceeding its target—by offering competitive rates of ₱27 per kilo for dry palay and ₱21 for wet palay. These were sourced mainly from Bohol and Negros Oriental. As of June, NFA-7 holds 80,000 bags in inventory, including 66,000 stored in Cebu, and a recent 35,000-sack shipment from Mindoro. New BBM rice programs are now in motion for Bohol, Siquijor, and Negros Oriental.
Each rice sack undergoes strict moisture and grain purity checks, according to NFA-7’s Olma Nedia, ensuring quality for every beneficiary. The P20-per-kilo rice initiative—launched in Cebu on May 1 by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.—is now available in nearly 80 Kadiwa centers nationwide, as the government pushes for wider access to affordable rice. | via Dann Miranda | Photo via DA
