2 Traffic violators arrested for extortion

Two men initially arrested for traffic violations in Parañaque were discovered to be involved in an extortion racket using the name of First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, according to the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG).

Brig. Gen. Eleazar Matta, HPG Director, identified the suspects as “Joselito” and “JJ Café.” They were flagged for using illegal blinkers and a protocol plate number “12” (designated for a Cabinet undersecretary). Upon inspection, police found a 9mm pistol, ammunition, handheld radios, three bulletproof vests, and even a C-4 explosive. The suspects allegedly posed as government officials to solicit millions of dollars in exchange for business approvals. One victim was reportedly threatened with business closure unless PHP5 million was paid.

Ambassador Markus Lacanilao, Special Envoy on Transnational Crime, said the vehicle used matched one involved in a 2023 entrapment. He confirmed JJ Café pretended to be a relative of the First Lady to secure contracts. Authorities are conducting follow-up operations, and the suspects will face multiple criminal charges. The public is urged to report any similar extortion attempts. | via Dann Miranda | Photo via
