Authorities have recovered the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), from the wreckage of Air India Flight AI171, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12. The tragedy killed at least 279 people on board and on the ground.
The first black box, the flight data recorder (FDR), had already been retrieved from a nearby rooftop. Together, the two devices are expected to offer crucial insights into the flight’s final moments, including cockpit conversations, system warnings, and aircraft behavior.
Indian officials, including Principal Secretary PK Mishra and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, confirmed the recovery during a high-level review. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will lead the probe, with support from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
Experts believe the CVR is mostly intact, raising hopes that investigators can soon determine the cause of the crash. A preliminary report is expected within three months. | via Dann Miranda | Photo via PNA
