UN approves ceasefire resolution in Gaza

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved a non-binding resolution urging an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, amid ongoing violence between Israeli forces and Hamas.

With 149 countries voting in favor, 12 against, and 19 abstaining, the resolution also calls for the immediate release of all hostages, unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza, and condemns the use of starvation as a weapon of war. This reflects the growing global pressure on Israel after the UN Security Council failed to pass a similar measure due to a U.S. veto.

Palestinian representatives welcomed the move, urging real action, while Israel strongly rejected it, calling it biased and damaging to efforts to free hostages. The resolution also reaffirmed support for a two-state solution and backed continued mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, referencing an International Court of Justice ruling for open humanitarian corridors. | via Dann Miranda | Photo via United Nations
