In a bold push to clean up government, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin says the Marcos administration is going all-in on digitalization to fight corruption and boost transparency. Bersamin touted President Bongbong Marcos Jr.’s “two-pronged approach” as a game-changer, modernizing red tape and shutting down shady deals.
“Corruption hides in the dark—digital tools shine the light,” Bersamin declared.
But don’t expect miracles. Bersamin admits tech alone isn’t a silver bullet. Real change? It’ll take a cultural reset rooted in Filipino values like katapatan (honesty) and bayanihan (solidarity).
The government is also working closely with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, rolling out reforms like the New Government Procurement Act. Making all bidders name their real owners to stop “dummy” companies from scamming contracts.
Thanks to these reforms, the Philippines now ranks 6th in Asia-Pacific for digital governance—and is leading in Southeast Asia. | via Allan Ortega | Photo via PNA/Joan Bondoc
